UW men's basketball: Arizona prep's potential impresses Badgers coaches

College coaches receive DVDs or news stories about potential recruits from friends, fans and others all the time. Everybody, it seems, wants to say they helped discover the next great prodigy.

That's why the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team's Howard Moore wasn't expecting much after he was given a DVD of Ryan Evans, a standout forward from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., this past winter by a mutual friend.

So you can imagine Moore's surprise when he hit the play button on his remote and saw the 6-foot-6, 190-pound Evans dominating basketball games with his raw athleticism and scoring ability. Those are moments that will be etched in Moore's mind forever.

"I was, like, 'Holy smokes,"' said Moore, a UW assistant coach who soon after embarked on a cross-country journey that would eventually lead Evans to sign a national letter of intent Wednesday afternoon to play for the Badgers.

Her son killed himself over a house.

At least that's what Maria Alonzo believes.

Abel Cardona Jr. and his wife, Maria Solis, bought the north Salinas home in May 2006.

"It was the home of his dreams," Alonzo says, standing by her car in front of the house.

But the working-class family with two young children could not keep up with the $3,700 monthly mortgage payments. Alonzo and her daughter lived there, too, and she contributed $1,800 a month.

Tension between Solis and Cardona's family resulted in Alonzo and her daughter moving out. That, plus the stress of the mortgage and other bills, led to Cardona's suicide, the mother believes.

"He was scared not to have money to spend with the kids," Alonzo says.

Dolton man gets 11 years for carjacking

A Dolton man was sentenced to 11 years in prison this week for stealing a Lisle woman's rental car at gunpoint last May in the parking lot of a Naperville hotel.

Denard Plunket, 20, pleaded guilty to vehicular hijacking and was sentenced Monday by DuPage Judge Michael Burke.

Plunket threatened the 47-year-old victim with a semiautomatic handgun outside the Homestead Village Hotel, 1827 Center Point Circle, about 2:30 p.m. May 3, police said.

Plunket was charged with the crime after being arrested a week later on a home-invasion charge in which Calumet City police found the victim's car, according to DuPage County court records. The home-invasion charge, which is in Cook County, is still pending.

Tired of lectures from Thad Box

In the early '90s Utah State University underwent a sudden and dramatic increase in student enrollment. There was such a shortage of available rental units that some students actually resorted to camping in the mountains. Many of the valley's residents saw an opportunity to both provide this needed housing and insure an income for their retirement years. A number of homes near the university were purchased with the intent of providing this needed service. This is how capitalism works. Unfortunately, when many of these homes were built it was unusual for a family to have more than one car. Therefore space for parking was at a premium. No one from the city government complained when students began to park on the median. Now large corporations have built significant apartment complexes to house students.
